Financial aid—whether in the form of loans, grants, work-study, grants, or scholarships—can be an important part of putting a Penn State degree within reach. The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering offers a wide-variety of scholarship opportunities to undergraduate students pursuing degrees within the department. Many of our scholarships are funded by donations from individual alumni and friends while others are the result of corporate gifts.
Apply for EME Scholarships
To be considered for EME scholarships, you must complete the online application form by May 1 of each year. Applications are reviewed, and scholarship decisions are made over the summer for the following fall and spring semesters. Students are evaluated based on the criteria set by the donors of each individual scholarship account (i.e. academic merit, financial need, PA residency, etc.). Incoming first-year students are automatically considered for scholarships based on academic merit and financial need. They should not fill out an application form.
Current Department Scholarships
Owing to the generosity of our alumni, friends, and corporate partners, EME has a large number of corporate and endowed scholarships to award annually to our undergraduate students.

All students who are offered admission to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences as first-year students are automatically considered for the Dean's Freshman Scholarship on the basis of their academic record and their performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), without regard to financial need. No applications are required. These awards are offered in the spring prior to enrollment on a funds-available basis.
NOTE: Freshman awards are for the freshman year only.
Penn State Scholarships are awarded to exemplary students and are highly competitive due to limited funding. Scholarships are a form of gift aid that does not need to be repaid.
